How to Navigate Getting Seen in the MediaDec 05, 2022
As a former publicist, I know how hard it is to get seen in the media. There are so many outlets these days from podcasts to television to social media influencers to digital outlets; it can feel overwhelming to know what to do and where to start.
Here are a few steps you can take to get started.
Tell your story in a press release.
Put yourself in the shoes of your audience and what you want to hear from other brands you buy in the store. Write an outline and then create your press release. A press release is one page, clear and concise about your brand story and product.
The press release is different from the pitch.
The pitch will be a few paragraphs convincing the journalist why they should pick your story over others. Create a separate link for the press release instead of a PDF. It will increase your chances of getting seen since a link won't bog down their email.
Make your pitch relatable. It should be relatable to the consumer and something that journalists find creative and enticing enough to put on air. It needs to make sense. It should be something that can be seasonally relatable too.
Example, do not pitch a back to school related item in the spring.
Tip. Everyone is fighting for air time, the ones that secure a segment will have the most compelling story.
